I have worked as a speech-language pathologist with children for over 15 years. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology from Universidad del Rosario in Bogota Colombia in 1995 and furthered my education by going for a year and a half specialty in Language development in children, which I completed in 1997. Upon arriving to the United States 13 years ago, I continued with my education by getting the bilingual extension at Marymount College. Moreover, I went for and completed in 2005 my Master’s Degree in Communication Disorders from Hunter College in New York. I am licensed by the state of New York and certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

Though the years I have worked in numerous settings including early intervention home based therapy, special education schools, and private clinics specializing in pediatrics. The field of speech and language pathology has allowed me to touch and help many people’s lives including my own. My dedication and desire to be the best clinician I possibly can and to go beyond the call of duty also stems from knowing how crucial communication and feeding are to the relationship between the family and the child and from being the mother of two with a third one on the way. I am very passionate about my work and deeply enjoy working with the families, schools, other clinicians and teachers to help children be functional in their environment and achieve their potential. I also love teaching and mentoring new therapists, and work as a CFY supervisor for a number of agencies and schools in the NY area and in Westchester.

I specialize in working with clients to improve difficulties related to early language development, feeding/swallowing skills, oral praxis and speech, development of social skills and behavior management. I work collaboratively on structuring the home and classroom environments through the use of visuals. I have also presented in several schools on a variety of continuing education topics such as behavior management, developing functional language, language milestones, facilitating language in the classroom, feeding and children and enhancing play skills.

As part of my commitment to excellence in therapy, Karem has continued to participate in continuing education coursework such as: sensory integration, play, pediatric feeding and swallowing, and language development. I have additionally received training in Speech EZ, P.R.O.M.P.T levels 1 and 2, and the S.O.S. approach to feeding.
